New Trend in Artwork

OVERSIZE IT!
What to get a jump on the hottest new design trend? Then get ready to learn just one new phrase. OVERSIZE IT !

For the past few months the design industry is abuzz with a shift towards providing products that feature an oversized balance, scale and proportion to enhance today’s larger ceiling homes and none is more evident than in the increased size of artwork that will adorn the walls leading up to those taller ceiling heights! And one of the most style savvy trends will be to hang oversized framed prints, artwork and decorative wall sculptures in every room of the house, including the bathroom and laundry. Whether it be a 30 x 40 framed triple matted pastoral setting, a vibrant 42 x 60 original oil, or even a simple 56 x 72 flat trellis woven basket hung above a mantel, the latest decorating trend calls for the drama of using oversized artwork and accessories that are both impressively large AND representative of the room’s decorating style. In other words, for today’s style savvy homes, the artwork hanging on the walls is more about expressing and supporting your overall decorating style then it is about displaying a few small pictures selected without rhyme or reason just to fill empty wall space.

Rather than hang undersized file folder- sized framed prints and diminutive decorative wall sculptures, today's style savvy homeowner will now display at least one oversized artwork in every room of the house in order to make that space come alive and radiate an appeal that is not only attractive but also supportive of their personal decorating style. From the colors represented in the artwork to the subject matter itself, large scaled artwork will be purposely selected to enhance and convey the intent of that space; and do it in a way that commands attention unlike smaller sized pieces. And the new trend towards oversized artwork will not only be for commercially produced framed art and original paintings , but also include everyday items hung and displayed with an artistic flair. Case in point: for my bare entryway wall located directly across from the front door, I selected two 36 x 60 convex slabs of polished tree bark and hung them one over the other in an asymmetrical diagonal pattern for an unexpected welcoming appeal. See art work from the back yard instead of the store!

So if the new decorating trend towards installing oversized art has you confused, consider this scenario: for a floor plan featuring an open kitchen /great room furnished with a country comfortable appeal and warm color palette, instead of displaying several file folder sized framed pictures hanging throughout the room, install only one oversized 42 x 60 framed antique quilt on a wall so that it is prominently positioned for viewing from both spaces and you'll be amazed at the difference it will make to the overall sense of warmth and welcome the room now provides. And to demonstrate the versatility of this new trend in artwork, consider the same kitchen/great room plan, only this time decorated in a soft contemporary style featuring buttery soft leather seating and a bold color palette. Simply by hanging a pair of single subject 48 x 60 unframed oil paintings positioned horizontally, one over the other, this unexpected arrangement will dramatically secure an ambience of classy sophistication worthy of contemporary acclaim and instantly make a favorable impression on anyone occupying that space .

Now as we all know, with every new decorating trend there always seems to be a new problem that can create difficulty in implementation; this one comes in the form of how one person can physically hang the oversized art pieces so that you won't need three arms and two strong backs to assist while securing the wire to the hook. Well guess what, sure enough this was a challenged I also faced. Since in my design practice I like to personally position and hang artwork for each of my clients, I’ve found the answer in a nifty little hook that makes the process easier and fail safe. It's a lightweight and uniquely crafted heavy duty picture hook with a strong magnet built right in ! With an integrated magnetic surface, the PROQUICK MAGNETIC HOOK makes catching and securing the metal framing wire a breeze: no more forced anatomical body positions, twisted shoulders and overextended arm stretches as you try to reach behind the picture to secure the wire onto the hook while juggling an oversized frame. All it takes is just a quick downward brush with the framing wire in the direction of the hook and the built- in magnet does the rest automatically securing the wire into the hook each and every time .

The PROQUICK MAGNETIC PICTURE HOOK was created by my friends at Danion Industries and invented by Michael Rivellino as a direct result of his frustration in trying to hang an oversized picture by himself. Without a second set of hands, he was not able to balance the unwieldy framed artwork while securing the wire to the hook and thus the invention of the magnetic hook was born. Shaped like an ordinary picture hook, the similarity ends once you test for yourself the amazing difference the PRO QUICK MAGNETIC HOOK makes whenever hanging artwork on the wall. And the design of the extra wide counterbalanced metal frame and integrated powerful magnet make for a secure hold that allows you to never reach behind the frame again; the magnet will grab and guide the wire for you! ... WOW such a simple idea to make such a dramatic difference!

Available at picture framing galleries as well as sold under the HILLMAN brand at most ACE HARDWARE and LOWES locations, the affordably priced hooks ( $ 3.15 - 3.50 each ) are packaged individually and are rated for the weight of the object to be hung.
